A peaceful island community woke up to unimaginable grief. Twenty-five people, mostly children and teenagers, lost their lives when a passenger bus veered off a mountain road and plunged thirty meters into a steep ravine on Fogo Island, Cape Verde.
The disaster happened late on a Saturday along the Campanas de Cima route. The vehicle was carrying thirty-two passengers back toward São Filipe. They were returning from an excursion to Chã das Caldeiras, a village settled deep inside the volcanic crater of Pico do Fogo.
Fatalities of this scale are extraordinarily rare in the West African island nation. Infrastructure across the archipelago is generally well-maintained, which makes the sudden plunge even harder for locals to process.
Inside the Fogo Island Disaster
Local authorities and emergency response teams faced immediate hurdles. The wreckage came to rest in a rugged, rocky valley that proved exceptionally difficult for rescue personnel to access. Crews worked through the dark hours of the night, hauling equipment down steep slopes to pull survivors from the crushed vehicle.
Twelve injured passengers were rushed to São Francisco de Assis Regional Hospital on the island. Medical staff confirmed that several individuals arrived in critical condition, requiring urgent trauma care.
The community lost more than just passengers. The bus driver was among the dead. According to education officials, the trip wasn't an official school function. Instead, it was an annual tradition organized out of kindness by the driver—a personal gift to the pupils he transported to and from classes throughout the academic year.
The Nation Responds to Tragedy
President José Maria Pereira Neves called the event a major catastrophe, while Prime Minister Francisco Carvalho declared two days of national mourning. Flags flew at half-mast as national leaders traveled to Fogo Island to stand with grieving families.
A solemn mass at São Lourenço Church brought hundreds of residents together. Eighteen coffins rested side by side inside the church during the service, representing an overwhelming blow to the tight-knit population. Because of the severity of their conditions, health authorities laid seven of the victims to rest early Sunday morning before the main services concluded.
Investigators are still piecing together what caused the vehicle to leave the asphalt. While national leaders have promised a full inquiry into the mechanics and conditions surrounding the crash, current priorities remain focused entirely on medical support for the survivors and community recovery.
