You could walk past a living piece of space history today and never even know it. Scattered across schoolyards, state capitol grounds, and university quads across the United States are trees grown from seeds that orbited the Moon. They look completely ordinary. They drop leaves, cast shade, and weather storms just like any other sycamore or pine. Yet their origins trace back to an unusual cargo bag packed away on an Apollo mission more than five decades ago.

The history of these botanical anomalies begins with a smokejumper turned astronaut. Stuart Roosa served as the command module pilot for Apollo 14 in 1971. Before heading into space, he worked for the U.S. Forest Service parachuting into remote wildfires. That background caught the attention of Forest Service Chief Ed Cliff. Cliff wanted to see what happened to tree seeds after a trip through space. He asked Roosa if he would take a small canister of them along.

Roosa agreed and tucked a metal cylinder containing roughly 500 seeds into his personal kit. While his crewmates Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell walked on the lunar surface, Roosa and the seeds stayed in lunar orbit, completing 34 loops around the Moon.

How a Decontamination Accident Almost Ruined the Mission

Space travel is messy, and the return trip proved hazardous for the payload. Once Apollo 14 splashed down, the crew and their gear went through strict quarantine and decontamination procedures in Houston. During this process, the canvas storage bag holding the seed canister burst open.

The seeds spilled out directly into the chamber and faced exposure to a vacuum. Officials feared the biological experiment was completely ruined. Forest Service geneticists took the scattered seeds anyway, shipping them to nurseries in Mississippi and California to see if anything could be salvaged.

To everyone's surprise, almost all of them germinated. Loblolly pines, sycamores, sweetgums, redwoods, and Douglas firs all sprouted successfully. By the mid-1970s, hundreds of healthy seedlings were ready for the world. The agency distributed them widely to honor the United States Bicentennial, sending them to national landmarks, international dignitaries, and local communities.

Then came the administrative failure: nobody kept a master list.

The Decades-Long Detective Hunt

Trees were planted, plaques went missing, and memories faded. By the late 1980s, the location of most space-traveled trees was a total mystery.

The tracking effort only started because of a curious third-grade teacher in Indiana. In 1990, teacher Joan Goble contacted NASA after her students heard rumors about a local tree with lunar heritage. Her inquiry landed on the desk of Dave Williams, a planetary scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. Williams had no idea what she was talking about. He checked around the agency, realized the legend was true, and discovered that no official records survived.

Williams decided to track them down himself. Working through old records, newspaper clippings, and tips from the public, he spent years piecing together a registry. He verified more than 80 surviving Moon Trees across the country, turning a lost administrative footnote into a documented scientific archive.

Why the Legacy Continues Today

Space agencies didn't stop with that initial batch. NASA revived the concept by flying thousands of additional tree seeds around the Moon on the uncrewed Artemis I mission. Those seeds returned to Earth, grew into healthy saplings at Forest Service facilities, and were sent out to schools, museums, and universities.

Finding an original Moon Tree today requires looking for subtle clues. Many stand near state capitals, science museums, or historical plaques, though many others grow unnoticed in public parks.
