When a wall of water sweeps away infrastructure along the trans-Himalayan corridor, we are not watching a natural disaster. We are watching a design disaster. We are watching the collision of reckless engineering, bureaucratic inertia, and a willful refusal to respect hydrological reality. The lazy consensus says climate change wrote this death toll. We are subsidizing our own destruction under the banner of green energy development. Too many sensors are installed for ribbon-cutting photo ops and then abandoned when the batteries die or maintenance budgets evaporate. A sensor that does not trigger an automated evacuation alarm before the crest hits is just expensive electronic trash.
Third, hold cross-border developers legally liable for cumulative watershed damage. When a poorly engineered dam or road project destabilizes an entire micro-catchment, the developers should pay for downstream retrofitting, not just offer pocket change to grieving families after the disaster makes headlines.
The mountains are not out to get us. They are just doing what they have done for ten million years: eroding. The only thing unnatural here is our stubborn refusal to adapt to the terrain we are trying to conquer.
Stop mourning the victims while ignoring the architects of the catastrophe.
