The incident unfolded on a Tuesday afternoon. Marine One lifted off from the Ellipse near the White House at approximately 2:33 p.m., routing toward Joint Base Andrews for a scheduled trip to Los Angeles. But a critical breakdown on the ground preceded the flight. Air traffic controllers failed to halt commercial departures at nearby Reagan National before the presidential aircraft took off.
Under strict protocols implemented following a fatal January 2025 mid-air collision between an Army Black Hawk and an American Airlines regional jet that claimed 67 lives, commercial traffic must be frozen during presidential helicopter movements. That did not happen.

They were not on converging flight paths. Both machines landed safely without incident.
